Introducing: Hippo Education Presents: The Monthly Rounds

Written by Neda Frayha, MD | Jun 26, 2025 2:49:09 PM

The truth is, we’d been wanting to do this for a while.

For a few years, the audio team at Hippo Education has been hoping to bring some of our favorite clinically impactful and timely content across all of our specialty podcasts - covering Emergency Medicine, Urgent Care, Pediatrics, and Primary Care - to a wider audience.

We each have that one piece we absolutely love, the conversation we wish we could send to all of our friends via Apple Podcasts or Spotify, because the clinical pearls we learned changed our practices right away.

Now, we can do just that. We are thrilled to introduce a new, free podcast featuring some of our best content: Hippo Education Presents: The Monthly Rounds, available on Spotify and Apple Podcasts

Each month, our team of editors will share a conversation from one of our podcasts that rocked our worlds. Some of these discussions change our practices immediately. Some are utterly of the moment, even if we wish they weren’t (ahem, measles). Some challenge us to look at old problems in new ways.

Empowering Clinicians to Prescribe Menopausal Hormone Therapy

In March 2025, The Monthly Rounds featured a highly practical, step-by-step instruction manual (in audio form) from our Primary Care RAP podcast on prescribing menopausal hormonal therapy (MHT) in an empowered, evidence-based way.

Ever since the Women’s Health Initiative study results were first published over 20 years ago, many primary care and women’s health clinicians have been reluctant to prescribe MHT. We now know that many patients can take MHT safely, effectively, and with profound relief of the menopausal symptoms that may affect their health and well-being for decades.

This conversation generated dozens of listener responses and questions and quickly became one of Primary Care RAP’s most listened-to pieces ever. It was a perfect choice for an episode of The Monthly Rounds.

Meeting This Measles Moment

In April, we shared an all-too-timely conversation from our Peds RAP podcast about diagnosing and treating measles. In the midst of one of the largest measles outbreaks in U.S. history, we wanted to provide all front-line clinicians with a primer on what to do if a person with measles shows up in your clinic, urgent care, or emergency department.

Challenging Preconceptions about Diverticulitis

May brought us a classic conversation from our ERcast podcast on the latest diverticulitis updates in diagnosis and treatment. Busting myths about everything from the utility of CT imaging to antibiotics, this piece brought ERcast’s signature humor and real-world pragmatism to a bread-and-butter medical diagnosis we all think we know cold.

Doing Better By Our Patients: the Pain of IUD Placement

The Monthly Rounds featured another viral conversation from Primary Care RAP in June, digging into reducing pain and anxiety with IUD placement. For decades, patients have known that IUD placement can be excruciatingly painful, and the medical community has been slow to respond.

When Primary Care RAP’s own  Dr. Matt Zeitler researched this topic at his clinical institution, he brought us dozens of pearls to better care for our patients receiving IUDs, from debunking myths about medications that don’t work to providing hands-on tips like applying topical lidocaine to a tampon. The video demonstrating this technique became one of Hippo Education’s most viewed Instagram and YouTube videos and was even highlighted in the American Academy of Family Physicians’ recommendations for pain management with IUD insertion.

One listener told us this piece changed her practice AND her life. We couldn’t wait to share this audio gold more broadly.

More to Come: Legal Lessons and Antibiotic Stewardship

In the coming months, we’re excited to share a fantastic “Legal Lessons” from our Urgent Care RAP podcast, discussing a real-world medical malpractice case that originated in the urgent care setting and what clinicians can learn from it. We’ll also feature a gem from the brand new The Right Script: An Antibiotic Stewardship Audio Course, just in time for cold and flu season.

Our goal is to share one conversation each month that made an enormous difference in our own lives as clinicians and resonated deeply with our RAP and ERcast listeners. You can find Hippo Education Presents: The Monthly Rounds on Spotify and Apple Podcasts, with a new episode coming out on the first Wednesday of each month.
