Introducing the Next Chapter of ERcast

At Hippo, we make choices big and small based on our mission: to empower the people of medicine to learn, grow, and thrive through education and community. As emergency medicine and EM education continue to evolve, we’ve been asking ourselves some important questions:

  • What does it really take to thrive in emergency medicine, arguably the most demanding specialty in the house of medicine?
  • Who are the people of emergency medicine, and where are their voices being heard?

If building a thriving, sustainable career in EM were a recipe, it would involve two key ingredients.

The first is knowledge. Clinicians need the right information to provide the best patient care — the latest guideline updates, insights from medical literature, and refreshers on high-risk, low-prevalence cases. And that information needs to be delivered in a practical way, so you take it back to your practice and apply it at the bedside.

But knowledge alone isn’t enough. The second ingredient is all of the “human” stuff.

It’s the well-supported team around you, the ones who have your back, who are working at the top of their scope of practice like a well-oiled machine. It’s the people of emergency medicine — physicians, NPs, PAs, nurses, techs, ED pharmacists, social workers, EMS, clerks, and administrators — collaborating, communicating, and working through healthy conflict. It’s learning how to work under pressure, with little time and even less information. It’s also learning how to care for yourself after a hard shift and how to navigate the social, societal, and administrative pressures on emergency medicine without completely burning out.

Equal parts medical knowledge and human factors — that’s the recipe for longevity in EM.

Inspired by this, we’re making some exciting changes to EM education at Hippo, starting with ERcast. While some things won’t change — you’ll continue to hear practical, relevant, in-depth conversations from clinicians working in community, academic, and rural EDs — there are a few updates we’re excited to share.

New Voices

Over the next few months, you’ll begin to hear some new voices alongside the ones you already know and trust. Starting in February, Brett Murray, MD, and Anne Steckowych, NP, will join the ERcast team as new hosts. Brett has worked with Hippo for several years as a contributor to ERcast and a host on Urgent Care RAP. Anne brings a fresh perspective shaped by years in emergency medicine. Together, they bring years of experience in emergency medicine, and they’ll focus on EM decision-making and team-based care. If you haven’t yet, subscribe to ERcast or check out the February episode if you’re already subscribed to ERcast to meet them.

Updated Name

Starting on April 1, we’re updating the show’s name to ERcast: Clinical Perspectives to reflect a broader focus on clinical practice across the EM team.

More Frequent Releases

Also starting on April 1, ERcast: Clinical Perspectives will release weekly episodes every Tuesday, allowing for timelier discussions about what’s happening in emergency medicine. Every week, hear the latest medical information from voices from every corner of the ED who highlight the human side of EM.

We’re excited for this new chapter of ERcast and to continue to support the EM community.
