Everyone’s buzzing with the news of the DEA’s new opiate training requirement for healthcare providers. That’s right - as of June 27th, 2023, any physician who applies for DEA renewal needs to certify completion of an 8-hour, one-time training on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance-use disorders.
But fear not, we at Hippo Education have got you covered! We’ve put together an opioid audio course called OUD Decoded: A DEA-Compliant Audio Course, covering some of the most relevant and educational topics on this subject. This course was designed to not only satisfy this new DEA requirement, but also to expand your knowledge and comfort level in caring for patients with Substance Use Disorders and Opioid Use Disorders. With this course you’ll earn up to 12.25 CME credits.
It is free for a limited time! Sign up before September 30th, 2023.
The best part? We’ve got pediatric-specific content. As pediatric providers, we may be impacted by the opioid epidemic differently than our adult-treating colleagues, but we still face challenges caring for our patients related to these topics. Between fentanyl overdoses, neonatal abstinence syndrome and management of chronic pain, get ready to up your opioid knowledge while satisfying the new requirement.
Some of the highlights include:
- Pediatric Chronic Pain - Dr Rita Argiwal and Dr Lisa Patel help guide us in the management of chronic pain in children. When should you choose a prescription opioid versus another type of medication? (And what the heck does the PILLS mnemonic stand for??)
- Opioid Abuse in Adolescents - Take a deep dive into recognizing the signs of adolescent substance use so you can assess and manage these challenging situations.
- Pediatric Analgesia in the ED - Learn about approaches to managing pediatric pain in the Emergency Department. Which medications should you be prescribing, and which are you better off avoiding?
- Opiate Use in Kids - Most of the time, you’re going to look for options other than opiates for pain management. But if opioids are indicated, what do you need to know? Here we cover everything from indications, to dosing, to which formulations of opioids come in kid-friendly liquid or chewable form.
- Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) - As rates of NAS continue to rise, it’s more important than ever to make sure you know the ins and outs of how to diagnose and treat neonatal abstinence syndrome. Join Sol and Liza as they highlight what you need to know to manage these babies like a pro.
- Eli’s Story: The Fentanyl Crisis - Learn about the fentanyl crisis from the powerful and heartbreaking story of Eli, son of Dr. Beth Weinstock. Eli died in 2021 at the age of 20 after ingesting a legal herbal supplement laced with fentanyl. His mother founded BirdieLight, an organization dedicated to ending the senseless loss of young people due to fentanyl poisoning. Sadly, his story is more relevant today than ever, as fentanyl overdose has become the leading cause of overdose deaths among 18-45 year olds.
Given the 8-hour DEA requirement, this course does contain some adult-related content. But that just means you’ll get the opportunity to explore and understand this rising issue from different perspectives in patient care.
